Implementing an Automated Picking Slip Recognition System based on Aspose technologies

Our client (hospitality industry supply warehouse) experienced a high load of documents (about 100 orders per day) that go with their sales process and ultimately have to be sorted, stored and what is most important - be easily accessible for on site and online team members. Additionally, our client had a sheer volume of archived papers to digitise that can be daunting.

Having a simple and reliable digital solution that will scan and process documents making them easy to store and find was a great business decision for our client.  That lets their staff spend more time working, and less time shuffling paper.


After an initial review, we decided to build the software solution for scanning, recognition and automated storing document files. The main challenge was to choose the right Optical Character Recognition (OCR) solution as a base of our application that will be powerful, robust and easy to use, as well as satisfies the project requirements and fits the budget.

We evaluated Top-5 different OCR systems and analyse each application to perform following tasks:

  • Scan fifteen one-sided standardised picking slips (client company format);
  • Separate the documents in different batches to separate pages of the documents;
  • Extract five OCR data fields from a fixed location;
  • Validate the OCR data with a database lookup;
  • Combine and export a full processed document.

Based on these tests we compared:

  • Speed of recognition
  • OCR accuracy (character level, word level)
  • Easiness to install
  • Value for money

Final results demonstrated that Aspose.OCR will be the right solution. We combined this with the other Aspose tools such as Aspose.PDF and Aspose.Imaging. Results were good enough to make text significantly more comprehensible. We compensated these gaps by issuing a technical manual for the users that includes the specifications to the scanner settings.
